-est or most 

짧은 단어  → -est / 긴 단어 most...

-est	long → longest	hot → hottest	easy → easiest	hard → hardest
예외	famous → most famous	boring → most boring	enjoyable → most enjoyable	difficult → most difficult

 

불규칙 변화

good → better → best	bad → worse → worst	far → further → furthest
little → less → least	much → more → most	far → farther → farthest

 

 

the + 최상급 or my / your, etc. + 최상급

The hottest day of the year, right?

 

 

1.

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year.

어제는 한 해 중 가장 더운 날이었다.

 

2.

Andy is my best friend.

앤디는 내 절친이다.

 

3.

How old is your youngest child?

막내가 몇 살이에요?

 

 

 

비교급과 최상급

 

최상급: This hotel is the cheapest in town.

            이 호텔은 시내에서 가장 저렴하다.  

비교급: It's cheaper than all the others in town.

           이 호텔은 다른 곳들보다 저렴하다. 

 

최상급: He's the smartest person I've ever met.

            그는 내가 만나본 사람들 중 가장 똑똑하다.

비교급: He's much smarter than I am.

            그는 나보다 훨씬 똑똑하다.

 

 

 

 

Oldest와 Eldest

eldest는 (특히 가족 중) 나이가 많은 사람을 말할 때 쓴다

 

 

That church is the oldest building in the city.

그 교회는 이 도시에서 가장 오래된 건물이다. 

 

Their eldest son in 12 years old.

그들의 장남은 12살이다.

 

Who is the oldest person you know?

         = the eldest

당신이 아는 가장 나이가 많은 사람은 누구입니까?

 

 

 

 

최상급과 전치사

최상급 + in  장소 

What's the longest river in the world?

세계에서 가장 긴 강은?

 

최상급 + in 집단 / 조직  

He is the hardest working employee in the company. 

그는 회사에서 가장 열심히 일하는 직원이다.

 

최상급 + of 시간 (일, 연 등)

It was one of the busiest time of the year.

그날은 일 년 중 가장 바쁜 날이었다.

 

 

one of + the + 최상급 + 복수명사

~중에 하나니까 최상급 뒤에 복수명사가 온다

 

It's one of the most famous universities in the world. 

거기는 세계에서 가장 유명한 대학이야.

 

It was one of the worst experiences of my life.

그날은 내 생에 최악의 날이었어.

 

It's one of the best rooms in the hotel. 

이 방은 호텔에서 가장 좋은 방이다.

 

She's one of the most honest people I know.

그녀는 내가 아는 가장 정직한 사람 중 한 명이에요.

 

최상급 + 현재완료(have p.p)

 

Who's the most famous person you've ever met?

살면서 만나본 사람 중에 가장 유명한 사람이 누구야?

 

That was the best vacation I've had in a long time.

내가 오랜만에 보낸 최고의 휴가였어.

*in a long time: 오랜만에

 

That's the funniest joke I've ever heard.

그건 내가 들어본 농담 중에 가장 웃겼어.
